APS – Board of Education Candidates [Updated]

The election season is starting to get into gear and the candidates for the Board of Education are lining up. Candidates have until August 31 to file, but many have already announced and are now raising funds.

Over the next several months, I will be following the candidates and focus on their positions on issues as they specifically relate to financial and other critical matters facing the Atlanta Public School System.

Here is the list of announced candidates so far:

District 1 – Brenda J. Muhammad (I) and Leslie Grant

District 2 – Byron D. Amos (I)

District 3 – Matt Westmoreland

District 4 – Nancy Meister (I)

District 5 – Raynard Johnson and Steven Lee

District 6 – Eshe’ Collins and Shawnna Hayes Tavares

At Large 7 – Courtney D. English (I) and Nisha Simama

At Large 8 – Reuben R. McDaniel (I), Tom Tidwell, Cynthia Briscoe Brown and Mark Riley

At Large 9 – Jason Esteves, Mary Louise Palmer and Anne McKenzie

The incumbents in office are noted with an (I). There are four incumbents that are not running for reelection – Burks, Y. Johnson, E. Johnson and Kinnane.

There are a number of rumors regarding additional candidates considering running for a seat, however, they have not yet announced their candidacies.

If I have left anyone off the list, please let me know.

[Update – the response was quick – Steven Lee, Mary Louise Palmer and Jason Esteves have been added to the list]
