His opponents are business owner and community advocate Steven Lee and information technology professional Raynard Johnson. The incumbent LaChandra Butler-Burks, who serves as Chair of the Budget Commission, is not running for reelection.

In an email Mr. Lawrence stated,

I am running because I feel our Board of Education needs a new and different energy. A board member that is compassionate, open and truly concerned about our kids. The voters are looking for a leader who will listen and provide oversight in a manner that will always be in the best interest of our kids. As a parent of three kids in the Atlanta Public School System (two have graduated, one May 2013) since 1995 I have always had an interest in our schools and how our kids are being prepared for the 21st century.

Some of the issues that should be addressed are the drop out rate and the Graduation rate not only in the general school population but also in Special Education population of our school system. We look for forward to a New School Chief that will address those issues early in his or her new administration.

Mr. Lawrence earned a BA from Howard University and started the Charles Lawrence Realty firm in 1988. Currently, Mr. Lawrence serves as the Broker for the real estate agency operating in the metro Atlanta area.

He has served as a parent volunteer on the panel for Project Grad Atlanta, as the Vice President Howard University Alumni (Atlanta Club), as the recruitment chair for Howard University alumni (Atlanta Club), as a participant in the APS for Career Days for the past 15 years and volunteered in reading, book donations and father/son programs in APS.

In addition, Mr. Lawrence has written a book titled 15 things teenagers should know upon leaving high school!, published by Akasha Communications.

As Mr. Lawrence provides additional information on his positions on issues publicly over the next couple of months, I will continue to document them in the BOE Candidates Positions and Links (see here).

Mr. Lawrence – welcome to the race and we look forward to hearing more about you and your views!
