Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education election – District 1, 4 and At Large 7 financial disclosures


Atlanta Public School candidates for the Board of Education have filed their campaign disclosure report for the second quarter (see disclosure reports here). In a previous post (see here) I reviewed the campaign finance activity for the At Large 8 race. The following is a review of the District 1, 4 and At Large 7 seats – each race has an incumbent and a single challenger.

District 1 – Incumbent Brenda Muhammad versus small business owner Leslie Grant

Brenda Muhammad (D-1) has raised $48.9 thousand during the last two quarters and after expenses has $30.3 of cash on hand as of September 30th. Major contributors or interest groups include former Mayor Franklin ($950), Atlanta Federation of Teachers ($1,000), the Giornelli family ($2,500) and the Committee to Elect C.T. Martin ($500).

Leslie Grant (D-1) has raised $32.0 thousand during the last two quarters and after expenses has $16.8 thousand of cash on hand as of September 30th. Grant relied primarily on small dollar donations, but did receive a $2,500 contribution from Arthur Blank.

District 4 – Incumbent & realtor Nancy Meister versus film consultant Taryn Bowman

Nancy Meister (D-4) has raised $12.0 thousand since the inception of the race and after expenses had $10.2 thousand of cash on hand as of September 30th. Meister relied primarily on larger donations with four of the donors accounting for approximately half the funds raised. The largest contributors were the Giornelli family ($5,000).

Taryn Bowman (D-4), including in-kind contributions of $3.9 thousand, raised $11.0 since entering the race in mid-August. In addition, her campaign received a $5.0 thousand loan. After expenses, Bowman has $1.5 thousand of cash on hand as of September 30th.

At Large 7 – Incumbent and former teacher Courtney English versus education administrator Nisha Simama

Courtney English (AL-7) has raised $50.1 thousand during the last two quarters and after expenses has $33.1 thousand of cash on hand as of September 30th. Significant contributions were received from Joel Klein (former Chancellor of NYC Schools – $2,500), Ceasar for Our Atlanta ($1,000), Arthur Blank ($2,500), Herman Cain ($2,000) and the Giornelli family ($3,000).

Nisha Simama (AL-7) has raised $57.4 thousand in the last two quarters and after expenses has $19.0 of cash on hand as of September 30th. The larger contributors include the Atlanta Federation of Teachers ($1,000), City Councilman Clarence Martin ($1,200), her husband Jibari Simama ($2,000), the Committee to Elect C.T. Martin ($1,000), Mayor Kasim Reed ($2,500) and from her colleagues at the Paideia School ($5,665).
