BREAKING – David Jernigan named deputy superintendent for the Atlanta Public Schools [Updated]

David Jernigan, who has served as the Executive Director at KIPP for Metro Atlanta, will be named as the deputy superintendent for the Atlanta Public Schools. The deputy superintendent is the number two position in the APS organization and normally serves as the Chief of Staff.

Per Jernigan’s LinkedIn profile, he has overseen the network of seven KIPP schools in metro Atlanta for the last six years and previously was the founding principal of KIPP WAYS (West Atlanta Young Scholars) Academy from 2003 to 2008. He also served in the Teach For America program at M. Agnes Jones Elementary School in the West End of Atlanta.

[Updated] He received a B.S. from the University of North Carolina, a Masters from National Louis University in Chicago and attended executive training at Harvard Business School. In addition, Jernigan has received many awards, as chronicled by his LinkedIn profile

In addition, Jernigan has received many awards, as chronicled by his LinkedIn profile:

David was honored with one of ten Outstanding Atlanta awards in 2007. He is also the recipient of the 2011 Dr. Joseph Draper Service Award from the Atlanta Metro Chapter of the Morehouse College National Alumni Association. In the same year, David was selected by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of Atlanta’s rising community leaders with its annual “40 Under 40” award. In 2012, David was named the Georgia Charter Leader of the Year by the Georgia Charter Schools Association.

Most recently, David was named as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine. David completed the LEAD Atlanta program for emerging leaders in 2007, and he was a member of the 2013 Leadership Atlanta class. David was appointed in 2008 to the State Charter Advisory Committee for Georgia, and he is also a member of the Georgia Charter Schools Association Board of Directors.

With this appointment, the chief academic officer remains the only position yet to be filled in Carstarphen’s senior cabinet. For more on the senior staff selections to date, see a prior post here.

I think that this is an outstanding choice – David is energetic, pragmatic and is dedicated to excellence in education. He will be a strong partner to the new superintendent.

  1. Jarod Apperson says:

I am thrilled with Meria’s choice! How exciting that students in the district’s traditional schools will benefit from what David has learned leading KIPP MA. What better way to spread best practices from incubation laboratories than to hire those who have worked in them for roles that impact all students! Great news.

  2. Beverly Fraud says:

And what’s one word that KIPP believes in that APS has refused to support it’s teachers in time and time again?

    Could that word be…DISCIPLINE?

  3. Kenyatta says:

David is a leader ahead of his time. I’ve had the privilege and honor in working under his leadership for many years. He will push you as an educator to be the best version of yourself. He forces scholars and teachers to take the limits off and see Beyond Z.
